Indoor vs outdoor sports courts for schools: how to make the right call

A school in Lucknow built a covered badminton and basketball facility three years ago. Good flooring, proper lighting, adequate height clearance. It gets used every single day. The sports coordinator says it’s the most-used facility on campus by a wide margin, partly because it’s available regardless of weather, and partly because students know it’s always in a playable condition.

A school forty minutes away made a different call around the same time. They built an outdoor multi-sport court with acrylic surfacing, a basketball setup, and badminton line marking. Also good quality. The court sees heavy use from October through February. From June through August, it’s largely empty because the surface stays wet, drainage is slow, and nobody wants to play on it in monsoon rain. April and May are worse because it’s fully exposed to afternoon sun and the surface temperature makes it genuinely uncomfortable.

Neither school made a wrong decision. Both made decisions without a clear framework for thinking through the tradeoffs. This article is that framework.

Why this decision is harder than it looks

The instinct in most school infrastructure conversations is to treat indoor and outdoor sports courts as interchangeable options for the same need, with cost being the primary differentiator. Build indoors if you can afford it, outdoors if you can’t.

That framing misses most of what actually matters.

Indoor and outdoor courts aren’t just the same facility with different weather protection. They serve partially different use cases, require different surface specifications, have different maintenance profiles, and create different programme possibilities. A school that chooses outdoor when it needed indoor, or vice versa, ends up with a facility that’s less useful than the investment deserves.

The decision also carries more long-term weight than most single-infrastructure choices. A school sports court, built well, lasts 15 to 20 years. The sports programme that grows around it, the habits students form, the competitions the school can host, the afternoon and weekend use it enables, all of that is shaped by what gets built.

Get it right and it’s an asset that earns its cost many times over. Get it wrong and it’s an expensive amenity that gets used when conditions happen to be perfect and sits idle the rest of the time.

The case for outdoor sports courts

Outdoor courts have real advantages that indoor advocates sometimes underplay.

Scale and versatility

The most obvious one: you can build bigger outdoors. An outdoor multi-sport court on a school ground can accommodate a full-size basketball court alongside badminton courts, a volleyball setup, and even a small football area within a budget that wouldn’t get you an indoor facility of comparable scale. Physical space and construction cost both favour outdoor.

For schools that want to maximise how many students can participate simultaneously, outdoor courts deliver more usable area per rupee than almost any indoor option. A school with 800 students and a physical education programme that needs to run multiple sports sessions at once will cover more students with a well-designed outdoor facility than with a single indoor court.

Natural light and open-air play

There’s a genuine developmental argument for outdoor sport that often gets lost in infrastructure planning conversations. Playing in natural light, in open air, in variable conditions, is different from playing in a controlled indoor environment. It’s not necessarily better or worse for every context, but for younger children especially, outdoor physical activity has developmental benefits that indoor sport doesn’t fully replicate.

Schools that have moved entirely to indoor facilities sometimes find that students who grow up playing sport only in controlled indoor environments struggle when they encounter outdoor conditions during inter-school competition or state-level events.

Lower entry cost

Straightforwardly, an outdoor court costs less than an equivalent indoor facility. A well-specified outdoor multi-sport court with PP interlocking tiles or acrylic surfacing, proper drainage, fencing, and lighting costs roughly ₹20 to ₹60 lakh depending on size and specification. A comparable indoor facility with the same court area, proper roofing, structural framing, adequate height, ventilation, and wood or PVC vinyl flooring typically starts at ₹60 lakh for a modest setup and goes well beyond ₹1 crore for anything larger.

For schools with constrained infrastructure budgets, outdoor is sometimes the difference between having a sports facility and not having one.

Limitations that are easy to underestimate

The limitation of outdoor courts in India is weather. Not in an abstract sense, but in the specific, operational sense of how many school days per year the facility is actually usable.

In most Indian states, the monsoon runs from June through September. That’s the first term of the academic year. For a school that has invested in an outdoor court and built a sports programme around it, four months of unreliable or unusable facility is a significant disruption. Some outdoor surfaces drain quickly and are playable within an hour of rain stopping. Others pool water and stay wet for hours. The quality of drainage design in outdoor court construction matters enormously for year-round usability in India.

Summer heat is the second limitation. In Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, UP, and much of central India, outdoor court surface temperatures between 12pm and 4pm from April through June can reach 55 to 65 degrees Celsius. PP tiles and acrylic surfaces absorb and retain heat significantly. The practical result is that outdoor courts in these regions are unusable for afternoon sport for a substantial part of the year, which often includes the period between academic sessions when the courts could theoretically be used most heavily.

The case for indoor sports courts

Year-round usability

This is the defining advantage of indoor sports courts for schools in India, and it’s stronger than the cost comparison suggests. A covered facility is available every school day, regardless of monsoon, heat, or rain. For a school that is serious about its sports programme and wants to build a consistent training environment, year-round access changes what’s possible.

A badminton programme can run three sessions a day, every school day, through the full academic year, without monsoon interruptions. A basketball team can maintain a training schedule through July and August rather than going to an informal break. Yoga, gymnastics, and indoor athletics can all find a home in a properly specified indoor space.

The utilisation argument for indoor sports is compelling when you calculate it properly. An outdoor court in a monsoon-affected region with hot summers might be fully and comfortably usable for 180 to 200 school days per year. A covered indoor court is usable on all 230 to 240 school days per year, plus evenings and weekends. Over the 15-year lifespan of the facility, the difference in total usable hours is substantial.

Better playing conditions for specific sports

Some sports are materially better played indoors regardless of weather. Badminton is the obvious example. Shuttle movement is significantly affected by even light outdoor wind, which makes competitive badminton genuinely difficult to practise outdoors. Most serious school badminton programmes in India are indoor for this reason.

Basketball is playable outdoors, and many schools manage perfectly well with outdoor basketball courts, but slippery post-rain outdoor surfaces and heat during summer sessions are real limitations. Indoor courts with proper sports flooring — wood or PVC vinyl — deliver a more consistent playing surface for basketball training and competition.

For schools that want to host inter-school competitions or aim for state-level participation in badminton or basketball, indoor facilities are often a prerequisite rather than a preference. Competition venues for these sports are almost universally indoor in India, and students who have only practised on outdoor surfaces sometimes take time to adjust to indoor conditions.

Surface quality and player safety

This is an underappreciated advantage of indoor facilities. The best indoor sports flooring options, sprung wooden floors, high-quality PVC vinyl with foam backing, provide shock absorption, energy return, and friction characteristics that outdoor acrylic or PP tile surfaces can’t match. For joints, particularly in adolescents who are training frequently, the difference in surface quality has a cumulative impact on injury risk.

For schools with intensive sports training programmes, this isn’t just a comfort consideration.

The cost and construction reality

The main genuine limitation of indoor courts is what they cost to build properly.

The “indoor” in indoor sports court isn’t just a roof. It’s a structural steel or RCC frame designed for the span required by the court dimensions, adequate height clearance (a minimum of 9 metres clear height for badminton, ideally more), appropriate roofing, ventilation or air movement, sports-grade lighting at the correct lux level for the sport, and the floor itself.

A single-court indoor badminton facility with basic structure and adequate specification costs ₹35 to ₹60 lakh. A two-court or three-court indoor badminton hall with better structure and PVC vinyl flooring runs ₹80 lakh to ₹1.5 crore depending on construction quality, span, and location. A full indoor multi-sport facility accommodating basketball, badminton, and indoor volleyball starts above ₹1 crore and can go significantly higher for larger spans and better construction.

Schools that build indoor facilities on inadequate budgets typically compromise on one of three things: clear height (making the facility unsuitable for badminton), lighting (making evening use difficult), or flooring (using cheaper surfaces that defeat some of the purpose of going indoor). A poorly specified indoor facility is sometimes worse value than a well-specified outdoor one.

Surface types for each context

Outdoor court surfaces

For outdoor school sports courts, the main options are:

Interlocking PP (polypropylene) tiles are the most common outdoor court surface for school and housing society projects in India. They’re modular, drain well between tiles, withstand heat and UV exposure, and are straightforward to repair with individual tile replacement. The playing surface for basketball and multi-sport outdoor courts is adequate for recreational and inter-class level play. PP tiles don’t deliver the performance characteristics of a sprung indoor floor, but for outdoor use in Indian conditions, they’re practical and durable.

Acrylic sports surfaces are the standard for outdoor tennis courts and are used for outdoor basketball and multi-sport courts. Applied over an asphalt or concrete base, acrylic provides good grip, consistent ball bounce, and integrated lane marking. It’s less forgiving underfoot than PP tiles, requires proper crack sealing before each monsoon, and can be slippery if algae develops during the rainy season. For schools that want a professional-looking outdoor court finish and are committed to regular maintenance, acrylic is the better aesthetic choice.

Indoor court surfaces

For indoor school sports courts, the main options are:

PVC vinyl sports flooring with foam-backing is the most widely installed indoor sports surface for school and institutional facilities in India. It provides shock absorption, consistent friction, good ball bounce characteristics, and court markings integrated into the surface layer. It’s more affordable than sprung wood and easier to maintain. For badminton, basketball, and multi-sport indoor use, well-specified PVC vinyl is the standard recommendation.

Sprung wooden sports floors are the premium indoor sports surface, used in serious school sports halls and in competition venues. The wooden surface over a sprung sub-frame delivers energy return and surface feel that PVC vinyl doesn’t fully replicate. They cost significantly more and require proper humidity management in Indian conditions, which adds to operating complexity. For schools with a serious competitive sports mandate and the budget to match, sprung wood is worth specifying. For most schools, high-quality PVC vinyl is the practical and appropriate choice.

The semi-covered middle ground

Worth mentioning because it’s underused in Indian school infrastructure planning: semi-covered or shade-structure courts sit between fully outdoor and fully indoor, and they address some of the limitations of each.

A concrete or steel shade structure over an outdoor court, without walls or full enclosure, doesn’t create the controlled environment of a true indoor facility. But it does protect from direct rain, reduce surface temperature significantly by blocking direct sunlight, and extend the comfortable usable hours of an outdoor court into early afternoon in summer months.

For schools where the budget for full indoor construction isn’t available but monsoon interruption is the main problem, a well-designed shade structure over a quality outdoor PP tile or acrylic court is a legitimate and often underspecified solution. Badminton remains wind-affected under a shade structure without walls, so it doesn’t solve the indoor badminton requirement. But for basketball, volleyball, and multi-sport use, a covered outdoor court performs substantially better year-round than an exposed one.

How to make the decision for your school

The right choice depends on four factors, and working through them in order usually produces a clear answer.

First: which sports matter most to your school programme? If badminton is a serious programme priority, indoor is likely necessary. If the primary needs are basketball, multi-sport, and general physical activity, outdoor or semi-covered may serve perfectly well.

Second: what is your climate and season reality? A school in Chennai or Kerala dealing with long monsoon seasons and heavy rainfall has different outdoor usability constraints than a school in Ahmedabad or Jaipur. Schools in high-rainfall regions lose more outdoor court time to weather, which strengthens the case for indoor. Schools in drier climates with shorter monsoon windows get more out of outdoor investment.

Third: what is the realistic budget including construction quality? The question is not whether you can afford the cheapest indoor option. It’s whether you can afford an indoor facility built to the specification that makes it genuinely better than a well-built outdoor one. A poorly built indoor facility with inadequate height, poor lighting, and a compromised floor is often worse value than a well-built outdoor court. If the indoor budget is tight, build outdoor well instead of indoor badly.

Fourth: how will the facility be managed after handover? Indoor sports facilities require more active management than outdoor ones: lighting management, floor cleaning and maintenance, ventilation monitoring, and access control for evening and weekend use. Schools with dedicated sports coordinators and maintenance staff can manage this. Schools without dedicated support sometimes find that indoor facilities don’t reach their usage potential because nobody is managing the daily operations properly.

Actionable takeaways before you go to planning

Map your court to your sports programme before you start. List the sports your school runs and wants to develop. Check whether those sports are better served by indoor or outdoor conditions. This is a more useful starting point than the budget conversation.

Visit both types of facilities at comparable schools. Not showroom examples, but working facilities that are three to five years old. Check how they’re holding up, how they’re actually being used day-to-day, and whether the sports coordinator would make the same choice again.

Get a detailed scope quote for both options before ruling either out on headline cost. The gap between outdoor and indoor often narrows when you’re comparing well-specified outdoor with entry-level indoor, and widens when you compare properly specified versions of each.

For outdoor courts, insist on proper drainage specification in the brief. This is the single biggest determinant of how useful an outdoor court is through the monsoon. Drainage as an afterthought becomes a year-round problem.

For indoor courts, don’t compromise on clear height. A 7-metre clear height indoor court that can’t properly host badminton is missing one of the main reasons to build indoor. Either build to 9 metres minimum or reconsider whether indoor is the right call for that budget.

Consider phased development. Some schools build an outdoor multi-sport court first, run a sports programme for three to five years to understand actual usage patterns, and then build indoor to complement based on what they’ve learned. This isn’t always possible with land constraints, but where it is, it produces more informed infrastructure decisions.
